In practice this means, despite increasing uncertainty or complexity, having a strategy that clearly connects an organisation’s business purpose to its people, to its society and to its place. The more resilient and sustainable an organisation’s eco-system is, the more resilient it becomes, and vice versa. Businesses that understands this symbiosis will in the long-term be able to respond to emerging realities more fluidly.

Fashioning more socio-economic value through farming

Greece is currently the world’s 5th largest producer of peaches and nectarines. The agriculture industry in Greece however still comprises mainly of subsistence farming which results in quality, but fragmented and inefficient production, as well as limited access to high-value volume-led markets. This in turn leads to sub-optimal socio-economic and economic outcomes for local farming communities.

In 2015 Salients co-founded, Froots, an agriculture business in the Pella region of Greece. Froots is currently the exclusive producer in the northern hemisphere of a niche EU trade-marked nectarine, which it sells to Tier 1 retailers in the UK.

The profit-led purpose of the business is to create UK and EU trade routes for Greek subsistence farmers, to achieve greater economic returns through niche product production, as well as to design agri-processing initiatives that expand and deepen the economic value chain, increases job creation, boosts food security, and advances local education in practices of environmentally conscious farming.
